Ye Antientist Burial Ground Walking Tour: The African American Connection
September 29, 2018

On Saturday, September 29th, travel to New London as Connecticut Landmarks’ Hempsted Houses join expert guides Jean Jordan, President of New London’s NAACP Chapter, Municipal Historian Sally Ryan, and the souls of New Londoners for a walking tour of Ye Antientist Burial Ground. This highlights tour focuses on the lives of people of African descent, who are buried there.

The site, located at the corner of Hempstead and Granite streets, was set aside as a burial ground in 1645. Among the interesting headstones we will see is one listed on Connecticut’s Freedom Trail, which belongs to Flora Hercules. She was the wife of Hercules, “Governor of the Negroes.” Flora died April 1749 at the age of 60. We will also see headstones carved by diarist Joshua Hempsted, who worked as a justice of the peace, farmer, shipwright, coffin builder, and gravestone carver.
