Samuel Deming Store
Merchant Samuel Deming (b. 1798) traded goods from all over the world
here. When the Mende Africans of La Amistad arrived in Farmington, Samuel Deming
provided second-floor quarters at his store for the men and a boy, Kale, until a
dormitory was built for the men on Austin F. Williams’ land. The space was later set up
as a school where they attended classes for five hours a day, six days a week. Although
the property is privately owned, it is operated as Your Village Store.
