389 Long Wharf Drive, New Haven, CT 06511Long Wharf, built by William Lanson, an African American, was the longest pier in New Haven at the time of its construction. It was part of New Haven's port system before the steamship changed the way goods were brought into the United States. Today, the Wharf is home to the life-size working replica of the Amistad, which first sailed in May 2000. The replica was commissioned by AmistadAmerica, a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching important lessons of the Amistad’s history including: perseverance, cooperation and freedom.
