800 Main Street, Hartford, CT 06103The first of several trials that involved the fate of the Mende Africans of La Amistad was held here. At the gate to the entrance on Main Street, there is a statue of Cinque, the leader of the kidnapped Mende Africans, at the top of a flagpole. The Old State House was Connecticut’s first State Capitol and was designed in 1792 by Boston architect Charles Bullfinch. The building is a National Historic Landmark and is open to the public as a museum.
