Samuel Deming Store

2 Mill Lane, Farmington, CT 06032

Merchant Samuel Deming (b. 1798) traded goods from all over the world here. When the Mende Africans of La Amistad arrived in Farmington, Samuel Deming provided second-floor quarters at his store for the men and a boy, Kale, until a dormitory was built for the men on Austin F. Williams’ land. The space was later set up as a school where they attended classes for five hours a day, six days a week. Although the property is privately owned, it is operated as Your Village Store.
