Lucy and Lois Tritton Memorial at the New Haven Green

New Haven Green, privately owned by the Proprietors of the Green, is the key feature in the New Haven Green Historic District, a National Historic Landmark District. Early in New Haven’s history it served as a grazing area and a burial ground . Slave auctions were also held on the Green at the site of the sheriff’s booth near the intersection of Church and Chapel Streets. In March 1825, Lucy Tritton and her daughter Lois Tritton were the last enslaved persons auctioned on the site.
