Battell Chapel: A Historic Space for Justice and Community
Battell Chapel is a historic site that highlights the involvement of Yale Divinity School faculty and students in aiding the Mende Africans of La Amistad. The Chapel features an exhibition of materials preserved by Yale, showcasing the university’s significant role in supporting the Mende during their struggle for freedom.
A Center for Religious and Cultural Activities
Today, Battell Chapel hosts a variety of religious services, including the Sunday service of the University Church in Yale at 10:30 a.m., which is the successor to the Church of Christ in Yale. The Chapel also accommodates Jewish high holiday services, Muslim Iftar meals during Ramadan, Buddhist programs, and monthly gatherings of Yale’s evangelical Christian groups. Additionally, it serves as a venue for concerts by campus and local orchestras, lectures, and numerous other significant community events, making it a vibrant center for cultural and spiritual engagement.
