Defender of the Amistad Captives
Roger Sherman Baldwin (1793-1863), a New Haven lawyer and abolitionist, represented the Amistad captives in the U.S. Circuit and District Courts in Connecticut from 1839 to 1840. Alongside John Quincy Adams, he secured their freedom before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1841.
Political Career and Legacy
Baldwin was the grandson of Roger Sherman (1721-1793), a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the architect of the Connecticut Compromise. He served in the Connecticut Senate, the Connecticut House of Representatives, and the U.S. Senate, and was Governor of Connecticut from 1844 to 1846.
