On November 24, 1865, the 29th Connecticut Colored Regiment returned to Hartford as heroes, having been the first regiment to march into Richmond, VA—the burning capital of the Confederacy. They witnessed President Abraham Lincoln tour the devastation and came home to both celebration and disappointment, as Connecticut voters had just rejected Black men’s right to vote. At Connecticut’s Old State House, Governor William Buckingham honored their courage and sacrifice, urging them to take pride in their role in preserving the Union.
To mark the 160th anniversary of this historic parade, the Alex Breanne Corporation, in collaboration with Connecticut’s Old State House, invites you to a commemorative memorial walk following the exact 1865 parade route.
Event Highlights:
- Pre-Walk Ceremony: Begins at 9:30 AM at Connecticut’s Old State House
- Memorial Walk: Starts at 10:00 AM, following the 3.1-mile (5k) historic parade route through Hartford. Participants may walk the full route, part of it, or remain at the Old State House to enjoy the museum.
- Audio Tour: Access a free downloadable GPS-activated audio tour with historical facts about key Hartford landmarks along the route.
